Rūtiņas Maple became the grandest maple not only in Latvia, but also in all Baltic region after the wind broke down the well-known Bajāri Maple near Dalbe, in Jelgava District. The grand maple, which grows in Trikāta Civil Parish, is indeed striking both to its views and its size. The girth is 6.04 m, and the height - 24 m. There is a cavity in the middle of the tree, although the opening is not very wide.
Rūtiņas Maple underwent treatment and reinforcement in 2009. In cooperation with professional arborists the Environmental Rescue Team cleaned the tree’s crown and installed a special anchoring system, which helps the maple to survive the high autumn winds and prevents further splitting of the trunk.
The maple is actually twice as amazing because it is a record-holder as to the speed of growth among grand trees. The girth of its trunk grows by four centimetres every year. This dendrological prodigy was discovered only in the autumn of 1980, one kilometre southeast from Trikāta, near Rūtiņas house. At that time the girth of Rūtiņas Maple was 4.96 metres, which listed it among grand maple record-holders. Over the period of 34 years from autumn 1980 to autumn 2014, its girth has increased by 1.36 metres, which means that every year its trunk became four centimetres bigger. It has been calculated that Rūtiņas Maple is 150 years old.
